Flu Virus Research

Flu Virus Research

The critical part in the research is to understand how influenza virus spread and mutate and is the key to preventing pandemics by discovering preventive, diagnostic and treatment methods.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), influenza viruses that occur in animals can infect humans, and later develop to pandemic strains. Several research areas have been outlined by the WHO relating to the animal/human influenza interface that could have a profound impact on protecting human being.

The Working Group of WHO on Influenza Research at the Animal/Human Interface was setup in 2005 to encourage basic studies into animal influenza viruses, with the aim to find out the cause the viruses can infect people.

ON-GOING STUDIES

Studies are on-going on avian influenza viruses, particularly H5N1. Researchers aim to discover the prevalence of avian influenza viruses in domestic animals and birds, understand the molecular basis of transmission of viruses from animals to people, assess the role of migratory birds in the transmission of the viruses, and evaluate the human immune response to infection with avian influenza viruses.

Studies are also being done on H1N1, a novel strain which is the causative factor of the current influenza A pandemic and researchers succeeded developed a vaccine which approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

PUTTING VACCINES TO THE TEST

The scientists from the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) play an important role and work in collaboration with medical research institutions worldwide to find better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat seasonal and pandemic influenzas, including influenza A (H1N1).

The trial is being conducted through the NIAID-funded national network of Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Units (VTEUs). Safety data will be collected and assessed continuously throughout the trial by an independent safety monitoring committee and investigators.

Here are six safe home remedies that are very effective if used in combination.

6 Effective home remedies

# 1. Healthy diet

Adopting a healthy balanced diet is the foundation of managing our hypertension. A major contributor to our condition is our poor dietary choices and habits. We may have had these bad habits for decades, but we need to break them. A simple way of doing that is to change our diet from poor food choices to healthy eating over a period of 30 days during which period we can use up the food we have in stock and replace it with fresh fruit and vegetables of all colours, lean white meat, oily and white fish.

# 2. Lose weight

Vaccines For Influenza Prevention in Schools in Central Texas

Vaccines For Influenza Prevention in Schools in Central Texas

Scott and White Healthcare provides a voluntary research study to help parents and children learn more about flu and flu prevention. You should be on the lookout for Seasonal Flu Vaccination Packets being sent home with your child or via the mail if your child goes to school in this area.

You should read the information contained in these packets carefully and then be sure to sign the Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Permission Form and return it to school if you want your child to get the vaccine. Also be sure you completely fill out all information on the form or it can affect your child’s ability to get the flu vaccine.

The goal of this VIPS research study is to prevent the seasonal flu which can become an epidemic in Central Texas schools. The program attempts to achieve this by improving flu vaccination in both students and staff.

What is VIPS?

VIPS stands for Vaccines for Influenza Prevention in Schools and this is a research study which is jointly developed by Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and Scot and White Clinic in Temple, Texas as well in collaboration with school districts of:

What is Swine Flu? Your Questions Answered

What is Swine Flu? Your Questions Answered

A new influenza virus called swine flu is creating panic not only among Americans but is causing panic on a global scale. The virus continues to spread from person to person and from one country to another. Barely two months after the virus was detected in the United States, the World Health Organization, declared on June 11, 2009, that a pandemic is underway.

The virus was first called swine flu because of research and laboratory test findings that shows a similarity between the genes of the new virus to the influenza virus occurring in North America’s swine population. The world’s pig population generally carried the swine influenza virus, but it was not common for the virus to be transmitted from pigs to humans.

Despite this, regular exposure to pigs can increase one’s risk of getting the HiNi infection. However, there is no risk of being infected with the virus by mere consumption of the meat of an infected animal provided the meat is cooked properly.

Doctors however decided to refer to the virus as HiNi and no longer swine flue, to dissociate the virus from the perception that it can be acquired by eating pig or pork. The rare cases of humans infected by the swine flu virus were among those who had direct contact with the animal. The latest HiNi outbreak is however caused by a different virus which has changed and can now infect people who have not had any close contact with pigs, and which can be passed on from person to person.

The new swine flu virus is not even the same as the seasonal influenza called AH1N1 virus which has existed for many years. Thus, doctors would rather call the new swine flu virus as “novel influenza A …

Difference Between Epidemic and Pandemic Level Outbreaks – Comparisons

Difference Between Epidemic and Pandemic Level Outbreaks – Comparisons

Regular Influenza Epidemic

Influenza, popularly termed ‘the flu’, is brought about by the influenza virus, affecting the respiratory tract, including the lungs, nose and throat. It usually starts from mild to serious sickness, and sometimes can be fatal also. The influenza virus can be passed on from person to person via the respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes, just like the swine flu virus.

This may be transmitted through direct person-to-person contact especially of the hands, or having contact with air borne droplets expelled by persons infected with influenza up to three feet away from each other. This is another difference between epidemic and pandemic.

Indications or symptoms of influenza may include some or all of the following: headache, fever, general weakness of the body, running or stuffed nose, muscle aches, sore throat and dry coughing. Additional symptoms in children may include gastrointestinal problems like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach aches.

The average incubation period of influenza, or the time the virus is considered communicable is about 7 days, with the first 2 days prior to the actual manifestation of the illness, and the next 5 days manifesting its full symptoms. For children with a lower immune system, the influenza virus may even take longer than a week to subside.

The flu and the common cold are caused by different viruses albeit they are both respiratory illnesses. There is an inherent difficulty in differentiating between the two viruses other than identifying its common symptoms. There should be caution in pointing out the difference between epidemic and pandemic level outbreaks.

Basically, influenza is much worse and complicated than the cold, and the flu’s accompanying symptoms like fever, headache, general weakness of the body, muscle pains, dry cough and sore throat, are more …
