They refrain from any use of toxic, synthetic chemicals on their crops. A court order was served to the farm from Sherman County, and it threatens to poison its fields of barley, Einkorn, field peas, wheat and other with three toxic herbicides:
Escort, Milestone, and Monsanto’s Roundup. The largest independent non-GMO and organic food distributor in the US is fighting back and ignoring the court order in all of its power. If there’s no change in this, the organic farm could go under after 18 successful years.
In an online post from the organic farm, it was stated that Sherman County is making changes to its statutory code that controls/eliminates obnoxious growing weeds. The weeds are Canada thistle, Whitetop and Morning Glory, which are able to be eliminated only by toxic pesticides and herbicides.
Even though the weeds grow in the farming land, they don’t hinder crop production or its beef production. The farm will be forced to pay for chemicals and labor expenses if this court order is passed and issued on the 22nd of May.
“This will destroy all the efforts Azure Farms has made for years to produce the very cleanest and healthiest food humanly possible,” they write on the website.
“About 2,000 organic acres would be impacted; that is about 1.5 times the size of the city center of Philadelphia that is about to be sprayed with noxious, toxic, polluting herbicides.”
The County would impose a lien on the farm, forcing them to pay for chemicals they don’t need or want. This can be prevented by the influence of supporters for organic farming. If you want to express disapproval to the spraying of these chemicals, you can do so by contacting them:
Lauren at the County office number is 541-565-3416
The farm is remaining hopeful that citizens will respond by denouncing the toxic chemicals and the change in statutory interpretation of pesticides by May 17, or by May 22.
“Raise your voice and speak up for you and your families and communities,” they write.
“This proposed action is completely unreasonable and would destroy an organic farm and pollute a massive area. If enough voices that benefit from organic produce speak up, the county will understand that there are people that care about their food NOT containing toxic chemicals. And if the supporters of healthy food can have a louder voice than the supporters of toxic chemicals, every politician will listen. PLEASE take action today and share this message. Overwhelm the Sherman County representatives with your voice.”
